Hi! I’m Angela Merwin, a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN) and Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC).
Here to help you feel more empowered and connected to yourself through building capacity and skills that support lasting change.
Professional background
My professional journey began as a dietitian, working for several years before returning to school to earn a degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling. What I noticed along the way was that mental health and nutrition deeply influence each other. Your mental health can impact your diet, and your diet can impact your mental health. This has led me to integrate both of my passions, and provide care that honors both psychological and physical well-being.
My Philosophy on Mental Health Counseling
I believe therapy is a collaborative process where clients have the capacity, capability, and inner wisdom to drive the changes they are seeking. My role is to be a mirror, supporter, educator, and challenger when needed. I center the client’s real-life experiences and goals while integrating evidenced-based techniques and counseling theories. Life is complex and nuanced, and I believe people generally do the best they can with the tools they already have. I believe people are more resilient than they think! My role is to help you uncover your strengths, core beliefs, and values, and also encourage you to move towards living a life that is meaningful and fulfilling for you.
Every single person has to eat every single day for their entire lives. And our current systems aren’t necessarily designed to encourage empowerment and agency with diet and lifestyle decisions. I believe humans have the ability to manage their own diet and to adjust it to their goals; however, systems like diet culture, the healthcare system, access to nutrient dense options, and health misinformation often disrupt that ability. My role as a dietitian is to help you build trust and confidence to nourish your brain and body with education, tools, and skills. There is no one-size-fits-all plan, so here is the answer I often give: “It depends. Let’s figure out what works for you.”
My Philosophy on Nutrition Counseling
One Other Note
Another part of my background that is important is that I come from a multicultural and mixed race family, spending my childhood and adolescence living in several countries across Central Asia. This diverse upbringing has deeply shaped my worldview on psychology, diet, and lifestyle as well as influenced my counseling approach. While my formal education was in a Western context, my upbringing has just as much influence in my counseling approach.
I believe every single person has a cultural context, whether it is visible or not, that can shape one’s values, worldviews, and core beliefs, and also influences how they experience the world. I am committed to authenticity, openness, and inclusivity for everyone who comes through my door.
